Wati alternatives: what to use when you want AI answers, not more flows

Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 13, 2026

Wati is a WhatsApp team inbox with broadcasts, from $69 billed monthly; its AI, Astra, costs $99 a month for WhatsApp and needs Wati Pro to run in Wati's inbox. ChatPal answers from your content: 100 replies a month free, 500 for $20 a month. respond.io, SleekFlow and Gallabox are bigger team inboxes; ManyChat suits Instagram plus WhatsApp campaigns.

We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.

Wati is a WhatsApp team inbox built around broadcasts, templates and chatbot flows, and for outbound messaging it covers a lot. This page is for a different need: an assistant that answers customers' questions by itself, from your own content, with no flows to build and maintain. We look at what that costs on Wati with its Astra AI, and on five other tools, for the same month of chats.

What to weigh with Wati

AI answers are a separate product. Wati's AI agent is Astra. Its free tier answers on a website only; answering on WhatsApp starts on Astra Pro at $99 a month, which includes 5,000 credits (a text reply uses one). To run Astra inside Wati's team inbox, Wati's help center says you need the Pro or Business plan, so a team that wants AI on WhatsApp with Wati's inbox pays for Wati Pro, $119 a month billed yearly or $149 monthly, plus Astra.

Flows run on a meter. Each time an automation runs it counts as a trigger. Growth includes 1,000 a month, Pro 2,000 and Business 5,000; past that you reply by hand or buy more.

Growth includes three users. Wati lists no extra users on Growth, so a fourth person means Pro.

Keeping the WhatsApp app takes a request. Wati's pricing FAQ says you first delete the number's WhatsApp account; its help center says Coexistence, which keeps the WhatsApp Business app on the number, is enabled when you ask Wati. If your team answers from the WhatsApp Business app today, ask about it before you start.

Message fees on top. Template messages are charged per message at Wati's rate card, by category and country. And from October 1, 2026, Meta also charges for ordinary replies (service messages) past the first 1,000 a month per number. That applies to every tool on this page that connects through the WhatsApp Business Platform, ChatPal included.

When Wati is still the right choice

Stay on Wati, or pick a similar team inbox, if outbound messaging is the core of how you use WhatsApp:

  • Broadcasts and campaigns. Growth includes 15,000 template messages a month (Meta's fees apply on top), with open and read rates.
  • Store notifications. With its $4.99 a month Shopify add-on, Wati sends abandoned-cart templates and works with Shopify orders, and it supports the WhatsApp catalog.
  • Ads. It captures leads from click-to-WhatsApp ads.

ChatPal does none of those: it only answers people who write to you. If your WhatsApp is mostly campaigns, an AI answering tool is an addition, not a replacement.

How we chose

We picked tools a small business would realistically compare with Wati: team inboxes (respond.io, SleekFlow, Gallabox), a flow builder that covers WhatsApp (ManyChat), and an AI answering tool (ChatPal). For each we read the pricing page and the help center on October 13, 2026, and noted what is metered, where the AI works and what costs extra. Prices are the US dollar prices those pages show; Wati, ManyChat and others show other currencies in some countries.

We make ChatPal, so weigh our view of it accordingly. We did not test the others hands-on. The tools are grouped by the situation they suit, not ranked.

What the same month costs

The tools meter different things, so here is one business on the same month: one WhatsApp number, two people on the team, and about 400 customer conversations the AI should answer. ChatPal counts replies, so we assumed three AI replies per conversation, 1,200 replies. That figure is ours, not a measured average: count a week of your own chats and use yours. Prices are billed yearly where the tool offers it, since Gallabox has no monthly option; ChatPal and Astra bill monthly. Meta's own fees come on top for every tool, and they are the same whichever you pick.

  • Wati: Pro at $119 a month billed yearly ($149 billed monthly), so Astra can run in the inbox, plus Astra Pro at $99 a month: $218. Astra on its own, without Wati's inbox, is $99.
  • ChatPal: Standard, $50 a month for 1,500 replies, billed monthly. It counts the replies the assistant writes.
  • respond.io: Growth, the first plan with AI Agents, $159 a month billed yearly ($199 billed monthly). It includes 1,000 monthly active contacts, so 400 fits.
  • SleekFlow: Pro, US$109 a month billed yearly, plus US$15 for hosting the WhatsApp number: US$124.
  • Gallabox: Essential, the first plan with AI agents on WhatsApp, $248 a month billed yearly.
  • ManyChat: Pro at $29 a month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly) covers 2,500 active contacts. On WhatsApp its AI works as AI Steps inside flows you build; its AI Replies from saved knowledge are Instagram only.

Meta's part. With about 1,200 assistant replies plus your team's own, this number passes Meta's 1,000 free service messages in the month, so Meta charges for the rest at its rate for each customer's country. Add a payment method in Meta's Billing Hub before you reach the free tier's limit, or replies past it won't be delivered.

A smaller business, 100 conversations a month. ChatPal's $20 plan covers 500 replies, about 166 conversations at three replies each, and its free plan covers 100 replies. Wati with AI on WhatsApp still needs Astra Pro at $99. ManyChat Pro stays $29 billed yearly. The first plans with AI on WhatsApp at respond.io, SleekFlow and Gallabox cost the same with fewer conversations.

What to check during a trial

Most of these tools offer a free plan or a 7 to 14-day trial. A week of real questions tells you more than any pricing page:

  1. Ask last month's ten most common questions, word for word as customers wrote them, including the badly spelled ones. Check each answer against your own website.
  2. Ask about something you don't sell or don't do. A good assistant says so and offers what you have; a weak one guesses.
  3. Reply yourself in the middle of a conversation. Check that the AI stops talking over you, and how it comes back. With ChatPal and the WhatsApp Business app, a reply from your phone pauses the assistant on that chat for 24 hours by default.
  4. Hand a chat to a person. See who gets alerted, where the chat waits, and whether your reply reaches the customer in WhatsApp.
  5. Read the meter after the week. Count what you used: AI credits on Astra and Gallabox, active contacts on ManyChat, SleekFlow and respond.io, replies on ChatPal. Multiply by four for a month.
  6. Send a voice note and a photo. ChatPal reads photos but doesn't answer voice notes; check how each tool handles what your customers send.
  7. Set up Meta billing. Whatever you pick, add a payment method in Meta's Billing Hub if you expect more than 1,000 replies a month on the number.

Wati or ChatPal

Keep Wati if WhatsApp is where you send broadcasts, order notifications and abandoned-cart reminders, or where your click-to-WhatsApp ad leads land for a team to work. You'll build flows or pay for Astra on top, and for outbound work that's a fair trade.

Choose ChatPal if:

  • most of your WhatsApp is customers asking questions your website, files or Shopify catalog already answer;
  • you want to keep the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and let the assistant cover the rest;
  • you also want Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and website chat answered the same way, on any plan, the free one included.

How setup works is in our guide to WhatsApp auto-replies and AI, and what changes for your number when you keep the app is in keeping the WhatsApp Business app.

Moving off Wati

  1. Decide what stays outbound. If you send campaigns or order notifications from Wati, keep doing that somewhere: ChatPal won't send them.
  2. Check what happens to your number. ChatPal's documentation covers connecting a number that lives in the WhatsApp Business app, or one not on WhatsApp at all. It doesn't describe moving a number from another provider, so ask Wati how to release yours first, or try ChatPal on a second number.
  3. Export what you want to keep. Your contacts and chat history live in Wati; keep a copy for your records before you cancel.
  4. Rebuild knowledge, not flows. An AI assistant answers from your content, so add your FAQ page, shipping and returns pages and price lists, and rebuild a flow only if it did something other than answer a question.
  5. Test before you switch. Ask ChatPal's Playground last month's ten most common WhatsApp questions (test replies count toward your monthly messages), then connect the number.

More options, including Instagram and Telegram tools, are in our comparison of AI chatbots for WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram.

Questions people ask

ChatPal's free plan includes 100 AI replies a month, shared across every channel. ManyChat has a free plan, but WhatsApp starts on Pro. Astra's free tier works only on a website, and respond.io and SleekFlow offer 7-day trials rather than free plans.

Yes, through Astra, Wati's AI agent product. Its free tier answers on a website only; WhatsApp starts on Astra Pro at $99 a month, and connecting Astra to Wati's team inbox needs a Wati Pro or Business plan. Wati's plans also include AI Copilot credits for your team.

With Wati, its help center says yes through Coexistence, once you ask Wati to switch it on. ChatPal can connect the number while it stays in the WhatsApp Business app; when you reply from the phone, the assistant steps back from that chat. We didn't check the others.

For replies, yes, above a threshold. From October 1, 2026, Meta gives each business phone number 1,000 free service messages a month and charges for the rest. That applies to every tool on the WhatsApp Business Platform, ChatPal included. Without a payment method in Meta's Billing Hub, replies past the free tier aren't delivered.

Wati, respond.io, SleekFlow, Gallabox and ManyChat Pro all send pre-approved template messages, which Meta charges per message. ChatPal doesn't send broadcasts; it only answers customers who message you first.
