respond.io alternatives for WhatsApp-first businesses
Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 20, 2026
respond.io starts at $79 a month billed yearly ($99 monthly) for 5 users; AI Agents need Growth, $159 yearly or $199 monthly, plus Meta's WhatsApp fees. For a small team that mainly wants WhatsApp answered: ChatPal, free for 100 AI replies, then $20 to $120; Chatfuel, $20; Wati with Astra AI, from $158; SleekFlow Pro, $109 billed yearly.
We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.
respond.io is a messaging inbox built for sales and support teams that work WhatsApp all day. It starts at $79 a month billed yearly for five users, and its AI Agents start on Growth, $159 a month billed yearly or $199 billed monthly, before Meta's WhatsApp fees. That's good value for a team of five to ten. For a smaller business that mainly needs WhatsApp answered, the five alternatives below cost less, or are built for a smaller team. We checked every price on 20 October 2026.
What respond.io costs
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Users included | AI Agents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $79 a month ($948 a year) | $99 | 5 | No |
| Growth | $159 a month ($1,908 a year) | $199 | 10 | Yes |
| Advanced | $279 a month ($3,348 a year) | $349 | 10 | Yes |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Unlimited | Yes |
From respond.io's pricing page on 20 October 2026, at the lowest contact tier on its slider. Three things move the bill:
- Monthly active contacts. Anyone you chat with in the month counts, whoever wrote first. Past your tier, Growth adds $12 per 100 contacts and Advanced $15.
- AI credits. Every plan with AI includes credits that grow with your contact tier. Past them, respond.io charges $15 per 1,000, with a hard cap at twice your allowance.
- Meta's fees. No plan includes WhatsApp message fees; you top up WhatsApp credit on respond.io.
Why businesses look for an alternative
AI starts at $159 a month. Starter has no AI Agents. A business that wants AI answering WhatsApp starts on Growth, $1,908 a year billed yearly, and pays for ten seats whether it uses them or not.
Contacts are a second meter. respond.io bills by monthly active contacts as well as users. If you keep the WhatsApp Business app connected through coexistence, messages you send from the app also count toward contacts.
Coexistence leaves your history behind. respond.io connects a WhatsApp Business app number without moving it off your phone, but its help center says contact and message history isn't synced, and the app has to be opened at least every 14 days.
No free plan. You get a 7-day trial of Growth with no card, then a paid plan.
None of this is a flaw for the team respond.io is built for. It's a reason to look if you're one to three people.
When to stay on respond.io
Stay if:
- five or more people answer WhatsApp, Instagram and other channels, and you need routing, assignment and workflows between them;
- you use Telegram, Viber, LINE or WeChat alongside WhatsApp, and want them all in one inbox;
- you send template broadcasts and follow-ups from the same inbox;
- AI is one part of a sales process you've already built in respond.io.
How we chose
We read each tool's pricing page and help articles on 20 October 2026, and Meta's WhatsApp pricing page. We picked tools a respond.io user would realistically compare: three team inboxes (Wati, SleekFlow, Trengo), a low-cost WhatsApp bot builder (Chatfuel), and ChatPal, which answers on its own. We make ChatPal, so weigh what we say about it accordingly; we didn't test the other tools hands-on. The list is grouped by approach, not ranked.

Pick by the size of your team
One or two people, mostly answering questions. You need the AI to answer while you work, not a team inbox. ChatPal answers on WhatsApp from your files and website, steps back when you reply from your phone, and costs $0 to $50 a month for up to 1,500 replies. Chatfuel suits you if you also send WhatsApp campaigns.
Three to five people, selling on WhatsApp. You need assignment and broadcasts. Wati Growth covers 3 users from $59 a month billed yearly, and SleekFlow Pro covers 10 users with AI agents for US$109 billed yearly.
A support team on email and messaging. Trengo puts both in one inbox for 10 users, from €299 a month billed yearly.
Five to ten people, with workflows across many channels. That's what respond.io is built for.
What one month costs
An example business: one WhatsApp number, two people, and about 400 customer conversations a month that the AI should answer on its own. Where a tool counts replies, we assumed three AI replies per conversation, so 1,200 replies. That's our assumption: count a week of your own chats and use your number.
| Tool | Plan for this business | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| respond.io | Growth, for AI Agents | $159 billed yearly, $199 monthly |
| ChatPal | 1,200 AI replies on the $50 plan (1,500) | $50 |
| Wati | Growth plus Astra Pro | $158 billed yearly, $168 monthly |
| SleekFlow | Pro, for AI agents | US$109 billed yearly, US$139 monthly |
| Trengo | Boost, plus HelpMate on 400 conversations | About €400 to €420 billed yearly |
| Chatfuel | Business | $20, if you stay inside its AI fair-use limit |
Our arithmetic on each tool's published prices on 20 October 2026, in the currency each site showed. respond.io's and SleekFlow's figures assume you stay within their lowest contact tier.
Meta's fees come on top of every line. Meta charges per delivered message, by category and by the customer's country. Each business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, which don't roll over. In this example the AI alone sends about 1,200 replies, so roughly 200 of them, plus your team's replies, would be charged at Meta's rate for each customer's country. Template messages, such as broadcasts, are charged separately and don't come out of the free 1,000. One exception helps: when a customer writes from a Click to WhatsApp ad and you reply, Meta opens a free window of up to 7 days.
respond.io or ChatPal
Choose respond.io if a team runs sales across many channels with routing, workflows and broadcasts.
Choose ChatPal if:
- one or two people answer WhatsApp between other work, and you want the assistant to take the questions it can answer;
- you want to keep the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and have up to six months of past chats in the inbox;
- your customers also write on Instagram, Messenger, Telegram or your website;
- you'd rather pay $20 or $50 a month by replies than for seats and contacts.
Here is how that works on WhatsApp, in an example conversation for a fictional furniture shop that kept its WhatsApp Business app:
Customer: Do you deliver to Brooklyn, and how much is it?
Assistant: Yes, we deliver to Brooklyn. Delivery is $49 for orders under $500 and free above that.
Customer: Could you hold the grey sofa for me until Saturday?
Assistant: I don't have details on holding items. Our team can see this chat and can answer that here.
When the owner replies from the WhatsApp Business app, the chat is marked Operator on the phone in ChatPal and the assistant stays out of it until you click Return to AI or a quiet period passes (24 hours by default, from 1 hour to 30 days).

Moving from respond.io to ChatPal
- List what respond.io does for you. Separate the answers your team gives every day from the workflows, broadcasts and assignments. ChatPal takes over the answers; it doesn't send broadcasts.
- Add your answers to ChatPal. Open Configuration, upload your price list or FAQ, and add your website as a link. The documents you gave respond.io's AI Agent can usually be uploaded as they are, as PDF, Word, text or Markdown files.
- Test in the Playground with twenty real WhatsApp questions from last month. Test replies count toward your monthly messages.
- Disconnect the number from respond.io following its help center. A WhatsApp number can be connected to one ChatPal assistant at a time.
- Connect WhatsApp in ChatPal. Open Integrations, then WhatsApp, and choose Connect and keep the app to keep answering from your phone, or Connect via Cloud API to answer only from ChatPal.
- Add a payment method in Meta's Billing Hub, so replies past the free 1,000 a month keep being delivered.
For how much WhatsApp itself costs, read WhatsApp Business API pricing. If you want to keep answering from your phone, see how to add an AI assistant and keep the WhatsApp Business app, and if Wati is your other candidate, Wati alternatives.
