Instagram auto reply: three ways to answer DMs automatically, and when to pick each

Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 19, 2026

Instagram auto replies come three ways. Free: up to four FAQ questions in the Instagram app, plus instant replies, away messages and keyword replies in Meta Business Suite. Comment-to-DM tools like ManyChat, free for 25 contacts a month. AI assistants like ChatPal, which answer any DM from your content, free for 100 replies a month. All follow Meta’s 24-hour window.

You can set up Instagram auto replies three ways. Instagram and Meta Business Suite have free, built-in ones: FAQ questions people tap, a reply to someone’s first message, an away message and keyword replies. Tools such as ManyChat add comment-to-DM and flows. An AI assistant answers whatever the DM actually says, from your own prices and policies. Pick by what your DMs ask: the same five questions, campaign comments, or questions that each need their own answer.

Every option runs on the same Meta rules, covered below. We make ChatPal, the AI option on this page; the native and ManyChat steps are written from Meta’s and ManyChat’s own help and pricing pages, checked on October 19, 2026.

Option 1: Instagram’s own auto replies

These cost nothing and take ten minutes. They send text you wrote, so they work best for setting expectations (“we reply within a few hours”) and for the handful of questions you answer the same way every time. All of them need a professional (Business or Creator) account.

Saved replies

Not automatic: you still send the message, you just don’t retype it. Handy for your address, payment details or delivery terms.

  1. Send the text once in any chat.
  2. Press and hold that message, tap More, then Save.
  3. Create a keyboard shortcut for it, such as “address”.
  4. In any chat, type the shortcut and tap the chat icon that appears. The text fills in.

FAQ questions in the Instagram app

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu, then Tools, then Frequently asked questions.
  3. Turn on Show Questions.
  4. Tap Add Question, type a question and, if you like, the automated answer. Tap Save.

You get up to four. They show when someone opens a chat with you, and tapping one sends your answer. The customer’s message lands in your message requests, so accept the request before you reply yourself. Choose the four you’re asked most: prices, hours, location, how to book or order.

Instant reply, away message and keywords in Meta Business Suite

Connect your Instagram account to Meta Business Suite, then on a computer:

  1. Open Inbox and select Automations.
  2. Click Create automation in the top right.
  3. Pick a template: Instant reply (sent to someone’s first message; Meta’s setup article calls it Auto reply), Away message, Frequently asked questions, Location, Contact information, Hours, Custom keywords or Comment to message.
  4. Write the text, choose Instagram as the channel, and save.

Three limits catch people out. Custom keywords are set up on desktop only, take up to five keywords per automation, match only exactly (they’re case-sensitive, so “Price” and “price” differ), and send after 15 minutes unless you reply first; if a keyword and a template such as the away message both fire, only the template goes out. Comment to message is desktop only and fires on comments that contain a hashtag you choose. And if you turn on Meta Business Agent, Business Suite pauses your instant reply and away message.

For wording, our auto-reply message examples has greetings, away and holiday messages ready to paste into these fields.

Meta’s own AI replies

Meta is adding AI of its own. Meta Business Agent answers customers on WhatsApp and Messenger, and in June 2026 Meta said it is expanding the agent to Instagram, free to start, with paid subscriptions to follow. Its Meta One plans for business start at $14.99 a month (Essential), and Meta names extra Business Agent access in that tier for WhatsApp only. Separately, a professional account that built a creator AI in Meta AI Studio can let it answer DMs, in the Instagram mobile app only; it is still rolling out. If either appears in your account, try it.

Option 2: Keyword and comment-to-DM tools

Tools such as ManyChat connect to Meta’s messaging API and run flows: “comment SIZE and we’ll DM you the chart”, a DM to new followers, a reply to story reactions, collecting emails in the chat. They’re built for campaigns on posts and reels, where hundreds of people type the same word.

Meta’s rule for comments is narrower than many expect: a business can send one private reply to a commenter, within 7 days of the comment (on a Live, only while it’s on air). A second message is allowed only after the person answers.

ManyChat counts people, not messages. On October 19, 2026 its free plan covered 25 active contacts a month and up to four active automations, without AI. Essential, also without AI, cost $17 a month for 250 contacts, or $14 a month billed annually. Pro, the first plan with AI replies, cost $39 a month for 2,500 contacts, or $29 a month billed annually ($348 a year), and each extra contact was $0.05 on monthly Pro. Prices are before tax and depend on your billing country. We compare every plan in ManyChat pricing explained.

Flows answer what you anticipated. A DM that doesn’t match a keyword (“can I bring my dog to the class?”) gets nothing, or a generic fallback you wrote, unless you pay for Pro and turn on ManyChat’s AI.

Option 3: AI answers

An AI assistant reads each DM and answers it from what you gave it: your website, a price list, a policy file, your catalog. It handles the follow-up too, so “and on Sunday?” after a price question gets a real answer. Here is an example conversation we wrote for this guide, showing how ChatPal handles a DM for a fictional bakery that uploaded its cake price list and order rules:

Customer: hi, do you do birthday cakes? how much for about 12 people

Assistant: Yes, we make birthday cakes to order. A cake for 10 to 14 people starts at $65, and we need at least 3 days’ notice. Which date do you need it for?

Customer: saturday. can you write a name on it?

Assistant: Yes, a name or a short message is included in the price. I don’t have Saturday’s availability, so the team will need to confirm the date.

Customer: ok, can you pass this to someone on the team?

Assistant: The team has your message and will reply in this chat.

The price and the three-day rule come from the bakery’s own file. When something isn’t covered, like Saturday’s availability, the assistant says so instead of guessing, and with handoff on, a customer who asks for a person is passed to your team.

If you take bookings, connect Google Calendar, Calendly or Altegio and the assistant offers free times as buttons under its reply, then takes the booking in the DM.

Setting up ChatPal on Instagram

You need an Instagram Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page, and its login. If you’re on a personal account, Instagram explains how to switch.

  1. Sign up at chatpalbot.com with your email or Google. On the Setup page, paste your website and click Let’s get started. ChatPal reads the site and drafts the assistant’s instructions.
  2. Add what the website doesn’t say. In Knowledge, upload your price list or FAQ on the Files tab with Upload files, or add a page on the Website & links tab with Add Link. A PDF, Word or text file works; a photo of a price list doesn’t.
  3. Turn off Instagram’s own automations. Switch off instant replies, away messages and FAQ answers in Business Suite and the app. ChatPal treats any reply sent from Instagram or Business Suite, automated ones included, as your team stepping in, and pauses on that chat.
  4. Connect Instagram. Open Integrations → Instagram, click Connect Instagram, log in and allow the permissions Instagram asks for. You’re back in ChatPal with “Instagram account connected successfully” and the account shows as Active. The assistant answers from that moment, so do step 2 first.
The Instagram Integration page with the requirements to connect and a blue Connect Instagram button
The ChatPal dashboard’s Instagram connect screen
  1. Choose what reaches a person. In Configuration, open the Handoff & leads tab and switch on Hand off to a human when needed. When a customer asks for a person, the assistant stops in that chat, your team gets an email or Telegram alert, and the chat waits in Chats under Handed off to a human. Your reply from there lands in their Instagram DMs.
  2. Test it. Send a DM from another Instagram account, then ask your ten most common questions in the Playground. Test replies count toward your monthly messages.

If you answer a customer yourself from the Instagram app or the Business Suite inbox, the assistant steps back from that chat and marks it Operator in Instagram. It returns when you click Return to AI, or after a quiet period (24 hours by default).

One assistant answers every channel you connect from the same knowledge, so if your Facebook Page gets messages too, connect Messenger as well.

What it doesn’t do: it doesn’t reply to comments or send a DM when someone comments, it can’t start a conversation, and voice messages and videos get no reply. Photos are read, up to four per message. A reply to your story is answered like any DM, but the assistant doesn’t see which story it was, and story mentions aren’t answered.

Meta’s rules every option follows

  • The customer writes first. A business can message someone only after they’ve messaged it, or reply privately to their comment. No cold DMs.
  • 24 hours to reply. Meta gives a business 24 hours from the customer’s message to respond, or up to 7 days when the customer wrote after tapping a Click-to-Direct ad. After that, Meta’s policy allows a manual reply from a person within 7 days, using the Human Agent tag. Answer handed-over chats the same day.
  • Say it’s automated where the law requires it. Meta’s policy requires automated chats to disclose it where applicable law does, and recommends it everywhere. In ChatPal, add a line to the instructions such as “If someone asks, say you’re our automated assistant and offer a person.”

What it costs, side by side

ChatPal’s other plans, billed monthly: Standard $50 for 1,500 replies and Pro $120 for 4,000 (pricing). Every channel and integration is on every plan, the free one included, and new accounts get a one-time welcome bonus of extra messages in their first month.

An illustration, on our own assumptions: 150 DM conversations a month at about three assistant replies each is 450 replies, which fits ChatPal Starter at $20. The same 150 people fit ManyChat Pro’s 2,500 contacts. ManyChat’s per-person pricing gets cheaper when each person sends many messages; ChatPal’s free and $20 plans cost less when you want AI answers on a smaller account. Count a week of your own DMs before you choose.

Which one to pick

  • Pick the native tools if your DMs are a few repeat questions and you mainly want people to know when you’ll reply. Free, and enough for many small accounts.
  • Pick a comment-to-DM tool if your Instagram runs on campaigns: giveaways, lead magnets, “comment LINK” posts.
  • Pick an AI assistant if your DMs are real customer questions about prices, availability, sizes or bookings, and they arrive when you can’t answer.

Some accounts use a comment tool for campaigns and an AI assistant for everyday DMs. If you do, test that the comment tool’s DMs don’t pause the assistant on the same chats before you rely on both.

For a salon or studio that books from DMs, our Instagram DM guide for salons walks through prices, booking into your calendar and the messages to keep for yourself. For an online store, Instagram DM automation for online stores covers product cards and order questions.

Questions people ask

In the Instagram app, tap Messages, then the three-dot menu, Tools, Frequently asked questions. Turn on Show Questions and add up to four questions with automated answers. For a reply to everyone’s first message or an away message, connect the account to Meta Business Suite and go to Inbox, Automations, Create automation.

Meta Business Suite’s instant reply goes to someone’s first message, and an away message covers hours you set. Neither answers the question itself. To answer whatever people ask, you need an AI assistant connected through Meta’s messaging API.

Yes. Business Suite automations and tools that use Meta’s messaging API, ChatPal and ManyChat included, need a professional account (Business or Creator), not a personal one. ChatPal also needs the account connected to a Facebook Page. You can switch in the app’s settings at no cost; a private account becomes public when it switches.

A business can only message someone who wrote to it first, and has 24 hours from their last message to reply. After that, Meta allows a manual reply from a person within 7 days under its Human Agent tag. Comments are separate: a business can send one DM to a commenter within 7 days of the comment.

Not on the same DMs. ChatPal treats any reply sent from Instagram or Business Suite, automated ones included, as your team stepping in and goes quiet on that chat. Turn the instant reply, away message and FAQ answers off before you connect it.
