Octane AI alternatives: cheaper quiz apps, and chat assistants for stores that want a conversation
Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 19, 2026
Octane AI costs $50 a month for 400 completed quizzes, up to two quizzes, with no free plan; AI features use extra credits. Cheaper quiz apps: VQB at $30 a month for 500 sessions, RevenueHunt free for 100 responses and $39 for 500. For a conversation instead of a quiz: ChatPal from free, Zipchat, or the free Shopify Inbox.
We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.
Octane AI is a quiz builder for Shopify brands, and its strength is what happens after the quiz: answers become shopper profiles in Klaviyo. If you want that for less, VQB and RevenueHunt build similar quizzes from $30 to $39 a month. If your problem is that shoppers have questions a quiz can't answer, the alternative is an AI chat assistant such as ChatPal, Zipchat or Shopify Inbox, which takes the request in the shopper's words and searches your catalog. We make ChatPal, which is a chat assistant, so we judge the quiz apps below as quiz apps. Prices were checked on October 19, 2026.
What Octane AI does and costs
Octane AI builds product recommendation quizzes for Shopify stores. Its AI quiz maker, Phoenix, drafts a quiz from a description, a document or a spreadsheet. Shoppers can also answer with a photo: from a selfie, its image analysis reads features such as skin tone and undertone. Quiz answers, visits and orders merge into one profile per shopper, and the Klaviyo integration, which Octane calls its most used, syncs them in real time for segments and email. It also connects to Attentive, Postscript, Gorgias, Recharge and Tapcart.
Pricing, from Octane AI's pricing page on October 19, 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Credits | Quizzes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $50 | $43 a month | 400 | Up to two |
| Plus | $200 | $170 a month | 2,200 | Unlimited |
| Enterprise | From $500 | From $425 a month | 7,250 or more | Unlimited |
One credit is one completed quiz. AI features use more: about 0.3 credits for Smart Products, 0.1 for Smart Copy and 0.4 for Image Analyzer, so a completion with AI recommendations comes to about 1.3 credits by Octane's own example. Past your credits the quiz keeps running and each extra credit is billed at $0.10. Unused credits roll over for 30 days. There is a 14-day free trial and no free plan.
Why stores look for an alternative
The entry price. $50 a month with no free plan is a lot for a store that gets 150 quiz completions a month. RevenueHunt is free up to 100 responses, and VQB's Convert plan is $30.
Basic stops at two quizzes. A store with a skincare quiz and a gift quiz has used its allowance. A third quiz, A/B testing and hiding the Octane AI logo all need Plus at $200 a month. VQB allows unlimited quizzes from its $30 Convert plan.
AI credits add up. If you use Smart Products on every result, 400 credits cover about 300 completions, not 400. At 1,000 AI-assisted completions a month you'd use about 1,300 credits: $50 plus 900 extra at $0.10, or $140.
Shoppers ask what a quiz can't. A quiz offers the paths you wrote. "Does it come in a travel size?", "is this safe with retinol?", or a request no option fits ends on a results page or in your support inbox. That isn't a reason to leave Octane AI; it's a reason to add a chat. Product finder quiz vs AI assistant walks one shopper through both.
When to stay on Octane AI
Stay if:
- your email and SMS flows run on quiz answers, and you'd lose segments by switching;
- photo answers are part of how shoppers choose, as with skin-tone matching;
- you use its integrations with Attentive, Postscript, Recharge or Tapcart;
- you're on Plus and its credits fit your volume.
Quiz or conversation: decide this first
The alternatives below fall into two groups, and they do different jobs.
A quiz app gives every shopper the same short path to a result you chose, and hands the answers to your email tool. Cheaper quiz apps keep that and lower the bill.
A chat assistant connected to your catalog takes requests in the shopper's own words, asks only what's missing, and answers the follow-ups: one size's stock, a comparison of two products, delivery. It doesn't hand structured answers to Klaviyo. ChatPal's guide to AI product recommendations on Shopify explains how it searches and what it won't suggest.
You can also run both. Of the quiz apps here, VQB is the one with an AI Shopping Agent built in.
How we chose
We read each tool's pricing page, Shopify App Store listing and product pages in October 2026, and re-checked every price on October 19, 2026. We make ChatPal, so weigh what we say about it accordingly; we didn't test the other tools hands-on. Tools are grouped by the job they do, not ranked.

- On your Shopify storefront, shoppers can add a product to the cart from the chat

What a month costs at three volumes
Quiz apps and chat assistants count different things. Octane AI counts completed quizzes, RevenueHunt responses, and VQB sessions, so if a session starts when a shopper opens the quiz, you may need more sessions than completions. ChatPal and Zipchat count the AI replies the assistant writes. We assume each shopper finishes one quiz or has one conversation, and that a product-finding conversation takes four replies. That's our assumption; count a week of your own chats and use your number.
| Shoppers a month | Octane AI | Octane AI with AI features (1.3 credits) | VQB | RevenueHunt | ChatPal (4 replies each) | Zipchat (4 replies each) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 | $50 | $50 | $30 | $39 | $50 Standard (800 of 1,500) | $129 (Starter plus one pack) |
| 500 | $60 | $75 | $30 | $39 | $120 Pro (2,000 of 4,000) | $300 (Pro) |
| 1,500 | $160 | $200 (Plus) | $50 | $199 | 6,000 replies, past Pro's 4,000: ask about Enterprise | $600 (Scale) |
Our arithmetic on each tool's published monthly prices in US dollars. Octane's Basic is $50 plus $0.10 a credit past 400; at 1,500 AI-assisted completions, Plus at $200 costs less than Basic's $205. RevenueHunt's Basic covers 500 and its next plan with room for 1,500 is Premium. Shopify Inbox is free at every volume, in your store's chat only.
Read the table for what it measures: for product finding alone, a quiz app usually costs less per shopper than a paid chat assistant, and VQB costs least of the paid tools here, at the prices listed on October 19, 2026. A chat assistant's replies also cover the questions a quiz sends elsewhere, such as stock in a size, delivery and returns, on every channel. If those questions now land in your inbox, part of the chat's cost replaces time your team spends today.
The same need, in a chat
A quiz lives on your website, and in Instagram DMs or WhatsApp you can only send its link. Here is how ChatPal handles a product question in Instagram DMs for a made-up coffee shop. We wrote it from the rules ChatPal's assistant follows; it's an example, not a recorded chat.
Customer: Hi! I want to get into pour-over coffee. Where do I start?
Assistant: Happy to help you get started. What's your budget for the setup?
Customer: Around $60. I already have a kettle.
Assistant: Here are two pour-over sets under $60, both in stock: the Pour-Over Starter Kit at $54, with a glass dripper, 100 filters and a measuring scoop, and the Ceramic Dripper Set at $42, with 40 filters. Want me to compare them?
[Card: Pour-Over Starter Kit, $54, in stock]
[Card: Ceramic Dripper Set, $42, in stock]
Customer: Do you have filters for the ceramic one sold separately?
Assistant: Yes, the Ceramic Dripper Filters are $8 for a pack of 100, and they're in stock.
[Card: Ceramic Dripper Filters, 100 pack, $8, in stock]
The assistant asked one question, left kettles out because the customer already had one, and answered the follow-up from the catalog. On Instagram and Messenger the products arrive as a swipeable carousel. Adding to the cart from the chat works only in the chat on your Shopify storefront, so here the card opens the product page.
Octane AI or ChatPal
In our view, Octane AI is the better fit when quiz answers drive your marketing: profiles, Klaviyo segments, flows that reference a shopper's skin type. ChatPal doesn't do that.
Choose ChatPal if:
- shoppers write to you on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp or Telegram as well as your site, and you want product answers from your Shopify catalog there too;
- your range is large or changes often, and keeping a quiz's answer map up to date is a chore;
- the questions that cost you sales come after the recommendation: sizes, stock, delivery, returns.
ChatPal also answers from a Horoshop store, and its chat widget goes on any website, though there it answers from your crawled pages and uploaded files rather than a synced catalog.
Adding ChatPal next to your quiz, or in its place
- Connect your store. In ChatPal, go to Integrations, then Shopify, enter your store's Shopify address and click Connect Shopify. Shopify asks for read-only permissions.
- Turn on the chat. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, open App embeds, toggle on ChatPal Chat Widget and save. The chat now answers product questions on every page, quiz results included.
- Keep the quiz one tap away. Under Chat Widget, open Advanced settings, then Launcher configuration, and switch on Show a channel menu when visitors click the launcher. Add an option that uses Open a link to your quiz page.
- Ask for what the quiz used to collect. On the Handoff & leads tab, in the Lead capture card, tick Email under Contact details to collect, and add up to five custom fields, such as "Skin type". The Export button on the Leads page downloads them as a CSV file.
- Test your quiz's paths as sentences. In the Playground, type your five most common quiz paths as a shopper would say them, plus a few requests the quiz can't take. Replies there count toward your monthly messages.
If you're still choosing between the two kinds of tool, start with Product finder quiz vs AI assistant. For more chat tools that work with Shopify, see the best AI chatbots for Shopify stores, and for setup details, ChatPal's Shopify page.
