AI chatbots for Shopify stores: which one fits a small store

Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 5, 2026

If shoppers only use your store's chat window, start with Shopify Inbox: it is free and answers from your catalog. If they write on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Telegram, ChatPal answers there from your catalog. If much of your support is email, Zipchat and Gorgias answer email as well as chat; ChatPal doesn't.

We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.

For a small Shopify store, these tools differ mainly in two things: what they can see in your store, and where they can answer: only in your store's chat window, or also by email, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger or Telegram.

What a store chatbot has to handle

  • Product questions with one right answer. "Is this in stock, and does it come in blue?" A tool that searches your store when the customer asks answers from the catalog as it is at that moment. One that works from a copy is as current as its last update, which is fine for a catalog that rarely changes. If you sell one-of-a-kind pieces, every sale changes what's in stock.
  • "Where is my order?" Every tool here answers it in some way, but they check who is asking differently: some ask the customer to sign in to your store, others ask for an email and order number.
  • Handoff to a person. A package that arrived broken, an angry customer, a wholesale inquiry: these should reach you with the conversation attached. Tidio and Gorgias are built around a team inbox for chat and email. Shopify Inbox gives the customer your store's email address when nobody is available. ChatPal moves the chat to its own inbox, and your reply goes out on the customer's channel.
  • The channels your customers actually use. Shopify Inbox answers only in your store's chat window, and ChatPal doesn't answer email. If half your support arrives by email, Zipchat and Gorgias both answer it.

How we chose

We looked for tools that install from the Shopify App Store, read your catalog, can be set up without a developer, and publish at least a starting price. For each we read the pricing page, help center and App Store listing on September 27, 2026, and noted what the tool reads from your store, where it answers and what is metered. We make ChatPal and tested it on our own test store; we did not test the others hands-on. We left out Manifest AI because it does not publish its paid prices.

The tools are grouped by the situation they suit, not ranked.

Chat on your store's website only

Shopify Inbox

Price: Free app

Good at

  • Its AI agent answers from your catalog, policies and pages, looks up orders after the customer signs in, and adds products to the cart
  • Replies in the language the customer writes in

Keep in mind

  • Answers only in your store's chat window: no WhatsApp, Instagram or Telegram
  • Shows a notice that the chat is AI powered by Shopify, which can't be removed or changed
  • Needs a Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus Shopify plan

Answers in messaging apps

ChatPal

Price: Free for 100 replies a month; $20 for 500 and $50 for 1,500, billed monthly

Good at

  • Answers from a copy of your Shopify catalog that stays in sync within minutes, so the price and stock it quotes follow your store
  • Shows product cards on your website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Telegram
  • Tells a signed-in customer where their order is, with tracking and estimated delivery
  • Every channel and the Shopify connection are on the free plan

Keep in mind

  • Add to cart works in your storefront chat, not in messaging apps
  • No email or voice calls

Zipchat

Price: From $64 a month billed yearly or $80 monthly, for 750 AI replies; 7-day trial

Good at

  • Website chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger on every plan
  • Looks up order status, tracking and delivery estimates in Shopify when a customer asks

Keep in mind

  • Billed per AI reply: Starter's 750 replies are about 300 conversations
  • Replies on every channel come out of the same monthly allowance

A chat app with AI added on

Tidio

Price: Free plan; Starter $24.17 a month billed yearly; Lyro AI from $32.50 a month billed yearly for 50 AI conversations

Good at

  • Lyro recommends products from your Shopify catalog and skips items that are out of stock
  • Product recommendations work in the chat widget, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp

Keep in mind

  • Product recommendations need a paid Lyro quota; the free plan's 50 AI conversations are a one-time allowance
  • Can't read variant, currency or stock data kept in third-party Shopify apps

When most support is email

Gorgias

Price: Starter $10 a month for 50 tickets, or $40 with AI Agent and 30 automated interactions, billed monthly

Good at

  • AI Agent tracks orders, handles returns and edits orders using your Shopify data
  • AI Agent answers on email, chat, SMS, Instagram DMs, Messenger and WhatsApp

Keep in mind

  • No free plan, and every automated interaction also uses up a helpdesk ticket
  • AI Agent on Instagram and Messenger is in open beta and can't send attachments

Sales assistants priced by traffic

Rep AI

Price: Free for 100 visitors a month, then $12 per 1,000; Starter $104 a month for up to 10,000 visitors

Good at

  • Adds products to the cart for the shopper, for the products you allow
  • Order status, returns and order changes on its Support plan

Keep in mind

  • Priced by site visits, not chats, so a busy month costs more even if few people chat
  • Actions such as add to cart work per product, not per variant

What it costs a small store

Take a store with about 100 chats a month, three to five AI replies in each, and 5,000 visits to the site.

  • Shopify Inbox: free, on any Shopify plan from Basic up.
  • ChatPal: 300 to 500 replies, so the $20 plan (500 replies). ChatPal counts replies, so longer chats cost more: at six replies each, 100 chats is 600 replies and the $50 plan. At about 30 short chats a month, the free plan's 100 replies may be enough.
  • Tidio: Tidio's price calculator puts 100 Lyro AI conversations a month at 62.50 a month billed yearly (it showed us euros; the 50-conversation tier is $32.50 in the US). The free plan's 50 AI conversations come once, not every month.
  • Zipchat: 300 to 500 AI replies fit in Starter's 750, at $64 a month billed yearly or $80 monthly. Zipchat's own estimate of about 300 conversations assumes 2.5 replies each.
  • Gorgias: Basic is $90 a month billed monthly, with 300 tickets and 30 automated interactions; each interaction above that costs $1.50, so 100 AI-handled chats come to about $195 a month. Starter ($40 with AI Agent) covers only 50 tickets.
  • Rep AI: priced by visits, not chats. Pay-as-you-grow at 5,000 visits comes to about $60 a month for a catalog of up to 100 products; the $104 Starter plan covers up to 10,000 visits and 1,000 products.

Prices were checked on September 27, 2026, in US dollars unless noted. Several of these vendors price by country, so yours may differ.

Setting one up

Before launch:

  1. Read your shipping, returns and FAQ pages as a customer would. The chatbot can only be as clear as they are.
  2. Install the app and connect the store.
  3. Ask it the ten questions you answered most last month, including the awkward ones, and something that sold out yesterday.
  4. Decide what always goes to a person, and who gets notified.
  5. Start on one channel, read the conversations every evening for a week, then add the next.

Here is ChatPal answering from the live catalog of our own test store, the demo catalog Shopify generates for developer stores. The prices and "In stock" labels come from the store at the moment of the question.

Questions people ask

If shoppers only write through your store's chat window and you are fine with its notice that the chat is AI powered by Shopify, often yes. It costs nothing to try, and you can add a second tool later for Instagram or WhatsApp.

Shopify's help says Inbox answers availability and price questions from your store data. ChatPal searches the store when the customer asks and checks again before a stock or price answer. Zipchat indexes your catalog through Shopify, says it stays current without a manual sync, and can look up inventory across locations. Tidio keeps a copy it updates when you change products, and can't see stock kept in third-party stock apps. Rep AI syncs your catalog during setup.

Shopify Inbox and ChatPal ask the customer to sign in to your store first, and ChatPal then answers only about that customer's own orders. Tidio asks for an email and order number. Zipchat finds the order by the customer's email or phone. Gorgias's AI Agent handles tracking, returns and order edits. On Rep AI it is part of the Support plan.

No. Each of the six has an app in the Shopify App Store, and none needs code for a basic setup. Leave an hour to test the answers before you tell customers.

Each counts something different. ChatPal counts the replies its assistant writes, including replies to your own tests. Zipchat counts AI replies. Tidio counts AI conversations, plus conversations your team handles. Gorgias counts tickets and automated interactions. Rep AI counts site visits. Shopify Inbox is free.
