How to turn your Shopify FAQ page into an AI assistant that answers in chat

Write your FAQ as one question per entry with exact numbers, publish it as an ordinary Shopify page, and connect the store to ChatPal. It reads your FAQ, shipping and returns pages when you connect and answers from them in your website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. After you edit the page, click Reindex. Free covers 100 replies a month.
Most Shopify stores already have the answers customers want. They sit on a page called FAQ, under an accordion with thirty entries, two clicks from the product the shopper is looking at. So the shopper types the question into chat or a DM instead, and you answer it again. An AI assistant fixes that by reading your FAQ page and answering from it, in the customer's words, on whatever channel they wrote from. Most of the work is in the writing. Below: how to write entries an assistant uses well, how to connect them in ChatPal (we make it), and how to keep them current.
Why FAQ pages go unread
A shopper with a question is usually mid-purchase, on a product page, often on a phone. Your FAQ asks them to leave that page, find the right section and scan for an entry that matches their wording. Their question rarely matches your heading: they think "will it get here by Friday", you wrote "Shipping times". Asking feels faster, so they ask.
The page still earns its place. It becomes the source. Every answer a good assistant gives about shipping, returns or payment should come from a page you control, so you change the answer in one place and the chat changes with it.
Writing FAQ entries that answer well
An assistant searches your page for the passage closest to the question, then writes a reply from it. Entries that work for that have a few things in common:
- One question per entry. "Orders, changes and gift wrap" is three entries.
- The question in the customer's words. "Can I change my address after ordering?", not "Order modifications".
- The answer in the first sentence. Then the detail.
- Numbers, not adjectives. Days, dollar amounts, cutoff times, which countries. "Fast shipping" gives the assistant nothing to quote.
- Self-contained. No "see above" or "as mentioned": the assistant may read this entry without the one before it.
- Text, not images. Images are stripped before the page is stored, so a shipping table saved as a picture is invisible.
- Dated when it expires. "Holiday 2026: order by December 17 for US delivery before Christmas."
Three entries, before and after:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Shipping. We ship fast worldwide! | How long does shipping take? Orders placed by 2 pm ET, Monday to Friday, ship the same day. US delivery takes 3 to 5 business days; it's free over $50, otherwise $5.95. Canada takes 7 to 12 business days for $14. We don't ship to PO boxes. |
| Returns. Contact us about returns. | Can I return an item? Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unworn and with tags. Start the return from your order status page. Return shipping is $6, taken off the refund; exchanges ship free. Refunds reach your card within 5 business days of the return arriving. |
| Orders. Info about changes, cancellations and gift wrapping. | Can I change my order after placing it? Within 1 hour, reply to your confirmation email and we'll change it. After that it's packed and can't be changed. (Then separate entries for cancelling and for gift wrap.) |
The "after" entries are longer, and that's fine. The assistant quotes the part that answers the question, and the customer reads one sentence instead of thirty entries.
What to keep out
- Answers that differ by product. Fabric care, sizing and what's in the box belong in the product description, which the assistant reads from your catalog. Sizing has its own guide.
- Old promotions. A forgotten "20% off in March" entry will be quoted in October.
- Contradictions. If the FAQ says 3 to 5 days and the shipping page says 2 to 4, the assistant may quote either. Pick one and fix the other.
- "Contact us" as an answer. If the honest answer is that a person decides, write what the customer should send (order number, photo) and let the assistant hand the chat over.
- Internal notes. Supplier names, staff shortcuts, anything you wouldn't say to a customer.
Turning them into chat answers
- Publish the FAQ as a normal page. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Pages, click Add page, add the title and content, keep it Visible and save. If your store-wide answers live only in collapsible blocks on product pages, copy them to this page: ChatPal reads product facts from your catalog and skips product pages when it reads your store.
- Connect the store. In ChatPal, go to Integrations, then Shopify, type your
.myshopify.comaddress in Store address and click Connect Shopify. While it sets up, ChatPal reads your store's own pages, including FAQ, shipping, returns and contact, and adds them to the assistant's knowledge. Each page counts toward your plan's limit on web pages. If the limit is already full, it reads none and tells you. The Shopify setup guide covers the rest of the connection. - Check it found the page. Open Configuration, then the Links tab. Your FAQ should be listed. If it isn't, paste the page's address (usually
yourstore.com/pages/faq), tick Single page only and click Add Link. - See what the assistant reads. In the ⋮ menu next to the link, choose Edit. ChatPal usually drops menus, footers and cookie banners and keeps the real content under its headings. If an answer is missing here, it's missing for the assistant too.
- Add what you don't publish. Some answers don't belong on a public page but are fair to give in chat. Add them on the Attributes tab with Add FAQ, as a Question and an Answer.
- Tell it what to do at the edge. In the Instructions field on the Basic tab, write what happens when the FAQ doesn't cover a question, for example: "If our pages don't answer it, say so and offer to pass the chat to the team. Never guess a date or a price."
From then on the same assistant answers from your FAQ in the website chat, and on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Telegram once you connect them under Integrations. Product questions are answered from your catalog, which ChatPal keeps in sync with Shopify on its own; your FAQ covers everything around the products. How the search behind this works is explained in our guide to knowledge-base chatbots.
Keeping it fresh
Your catalog syncs itself. Your pages don't change in ChatPal until it reads them again. Each time you edit the FAQ in Shopify, open the ⋮ menu next to its link on the Links tab and choose Reindex.
Two habits keep the answers right:
- Change the page, not the copy. You can edit ChatPal's copy of a page, from the ⋮ menu or from an answer in the Playground, but the next crawl brings the page's own text back. A wrong answer is fixed for good only on the page in Shopify.
- Grow it from real questions. Once a month, read the chats your assistant handed to a person or answered with "I don't know". A question that keeps coming up is a missing FAQ entry. Write it, reindex, done.
Testing it
Open Playground, the same chat your shoppers see, and ask your FAQ questions the way customers would, not the way you titled them:
- "how much is shipping to toronto" (should find the Canada entry and say $14);
- "can i send it back if i wore it once" (should say unworn only);
- "do you have gift boxes" (if you split gift wrap into its own entry, it should find it);
- a question your FAQ doesn't answer, such as "do you ship to Brazil?" if you don't list it. It should say it can't confirm and offer the team, not invent a price.
Under each reply, click Why this answer? to see which passage it used. If it quoted the wrong entry, the usual cause is two entries saying different things, or one entry covering several questions. Fix the page, reindex, and click Ask again.
Every Playground reply counts toward your monthly messages: Free has 100, Starter $20 a month for 500 (plans, checked 13 October 2026). Once the answers are right, click Save as test on the conversation, so Assistant Tests can rerun it after your next change.
For the wider picture of what a store's assistant should answer and hand off, read the customer service chatbot guide for online stores.
If your FAQ is in decent shape already, the first test takes about ten minutes: connect the store on the free plan, check the FAQ shows up on the Links tab, and ask the Playground the four questions above. The answers will tell you which entries to rewrite.
