Intercom Fin alternatives: when a flat price fits better than per-outcome
Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 13, 2026
Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, which mostly means a conversation it resolves, so the bill grows with volume. ChatPal's flat plans count AI replies, from $20 a month; Crisp a flat $95 per workspace with AI credits. Zendesk and Gorgias suit helpdesk-first teams; Tidio and Chatbase sell AI in blocks. Stay on Fin if it resolves most chats.
We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.
Fin, Intercom's AI agent, is good at answering from help articles. It is priced per outcome: $0.99 each, which mostly means a conversation it resolves, plus Intercom seats if you use its helpdesk. If every conversation is an outcome, 500 a month cost $495 and 2,000 cost $1,980. For a store or a small support team with steady volume, that is the number to compare against a flat plan.
This page is for teams weighing whether to keep paying per outcome. It groups six alternatives by situation: a flat price, a helpdesk that comes first, and AI sold in blocks.
We make ChatPal, which is one of the alternatives, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
How Fin's price adds up
The bill follows your volume. Every outcome is $0.99. A sale, a shipping delay or a product launch that doubles your chats doubles the AI line too. Fin's site says it has configurable alerts and limits, which helps, but the published price stays $0.99 per outcome as you grow.
You pay when a customer asks for nothing more. Intercom counts an outcome when the customer confirms the issue is resolved, when Fin completes a workflow, and also when the customer doesn't ask for more help after Fin's reply. Intercom bills that as an assumed resolution, deducted if they come back for more help.
Seats on top. On Intercom's own helpdesk, each seat is $19 to $132 a month billed annually, or $29 to $139 billed monthly. Fin on another helpdesk has no seat fees, but a minimum of 50 outcomes a month.
Channels cost extra. On Intercom, WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay-as-you-go on top of seats and outcomes. For a store whose customers write on WhatsApp, that is a third meter.
When to stay on Fin
Stay if Fin resolves most of the conversations it touches. In our view, $0.99 for a resolution costs less than an agent's time on the same question. Stay too if:
- you're on Intercom for more than chat: in-app messaging, product tours, team inboxes, SLAs;
- your support runs through Salesforce, HubSpot or Zendesk, and Fin's helpdesk integrations save you a migration;
- you want to pay only when the AI finishes a job, and most of your conversations need a person anyway. Conversations Fin passes to your team without an outcome are free, while flat-price tools charge for their replies either way.
How we chose
We looked for tools that answer customers with AI from your own content, publish their prices, and work for a store or a small support team without a developer. For each one we read the pricing page and help center on 13 October 2026 and noted what is metered and what happens at the limit. We make ChatPal; we did not test the others hands-on.
The tools are grouped by situation, not ranked.

What the same month costs
One month, 500 conversations the AI should handle. Where a tool counts resolutions, outcomes or interactions, we counted every conversation, the worst case. Where it counts replies, we assumed three per conversation, 1,500 replies. Both numbers are ours; check them against a week of your own chats. Billed monthly, before tax and channel fees.
| Tool | What it meters | 500 AI conversations | What else you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fin on Intercom | Outcomes | Up to $495 | Seats: $58 for 2 on Essential |
| Fin on your helpdesk | Outcomes | Up to $495 | Your helpdesk's seats |
| ChatPal | AI replies | $50 (1,500 replies) | None for the AI |
| Crisp Essentials | AI credits | $95, around 450 conversations included | A few dollars of pay-as-you-go for the rest |
| Chatbase Standard | Message credits | $150 for 4,000 credits | More credits if you pick a larger AI model |
| Tidio Lyro | AI conversations | $350 | Tidio Starter, $29, if your team replies in Tidio |
| Gorgias Basic | Interactions and tickets | $500 to $735 for AI Agent | $60 plan, plus $80 for 200 tickets over 300 |
| Zendesk Suite Team | Automated resolutions | Up to $980 pay-as-you-go, $735 committed | Seats: $138 for 2 agents |
Zendesk and Gorgias include a few AI conversations per agent or per plan (10 for 2 Zendesk agents, 30 on Gorgias Basic), which the table already subtracts. Fin doesn't charge for conversations it passes to your team without an outcome, and on Zendesk's newer resolution tiers conversations that end with a person or unconfirmed are free, so both can come in well below the worst case.
In our arithmetic, the per-outcome tools come out ahead when the AI handles little, and the flat-price tools once volume is steady, as long as it fits the plan: ChatPal's top listed plan is 4,000 replies for $120 a month, and Crisp's Plus covers around 1,350 AI conversations for $295.
Five meters, and how to compare them
Each tool on this page counts something different, so convert everything to your own month before you compare prices.
- Outcomes or resolutions (Fin, Zendesk): at most one per conversation, and only when the AI finishes it. Multiply your monthly conversations by the share the AI handles to the end. Fin's definition includes customers who don't ask for more help; Zendesk's newer tiers charge only for verified ones.
- Automated interactions (Gorgias): one per conversation the AI Agent handles, and each also uses a helpdesk ticket, so count it twice against your plan.
- AI conversations (Tidio's Lyro): one per conversation with at least one AI reply, sold in fixed monthly steps from 50 to 1,000.
- Credits (Chatbase, Crisp): Chatbase charges 1 to 5 credits per reply depending on the AI model; Crisp's credits are token-based, and it estimates $0.05 to $0.10 per AI-handled conversation.
- Replies (ChatPal): one per message the assistant writes. Multiply conversations by replies per conversation. Replies on chats that end with your team count too.
A quick way to get your inputs: export a week of chats, count the conversations, count the ones that needed a person, and count the AI or agent replies in a few typical ones. Multiply by four and a bit for the month.
Fin or ChatPal
Choose Fin if:
- you need email, voice or a Salesforce or HubSpot helpdesk covered by the same AI;
- most of your AI conversations end in a resolution, so you pay $0.99 only for finished work;
- you want in-app support inside a software product.
Choose ChatPal if:
- you run a store, and most questions are about products, sizes, delivery and orders;
- your customers write on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Telegram as well as your website, and you want one assistant on all of them, on any plan;
- you sell on Shopify and want answers from your catalog, product cards in the chat, and order status for signed-in customers;
- you'd rather pay a fixed monthly price for the AI (on WhatsApp, Meta bills replies past 1,000 a month per number). At 100% of monthly usage the assistant stops replying until you upgrade or the month resets; it warns the owner and admins at 80%.
This is ChatPal answering from the catalog of our own test store.

Moving off Fin
- Measure a normal week. In Intercom, count Fin's outcomes and how many conversations went to your team. In the new tool, count what it meters: replies, credits or resolutions. That is the only fair price comparison.
- Keep your help center. If it lives in Zendesk, ChatPal and Tidio can import it, and Fin itself syncs it. Public help articles anywhere can be added to most AI tools by their link. In ChatPal that is Configuration, the Links tab, Add Link.
- List what Fin does beyond answering. Workflows that look up an order, issue a refund or route a conversation need an equivalent. ChatPal tells signed-in Shopify customers where their order is and passes cancel or delivery-change requests to your team; it doesn't make refunds itself.
- Run both on different channels first. Put the new tool on WhatsApp, Instagram or one website section while Fin keeps your main chat, and read the conversations every day for a week.
- Switch, then set a limit. Turn Fin off on the channels you've moved, and set up the new tool's usage alerts before your next busy week.
Step 4 is where ChatPal is easiest to try: connect WhatsApp or Instagram on the free plan, leave Fin on your website chat, and compare the answers before you touch your Intercom seats. The pricing page shows which plan your reply count lands on.
