Zendesk alternatives for small teams, and when to keep Zendesk
Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 13, 2026
For 3 agents billed annually, Zendesk Suite Team is $165 a month before extra AI resolutions; Freshdesk Growth is $57, Help Scout Standard $75 and Zoho Desk Standard $42. Gorgias prices by ticket from $10. If chat and messaging matter most, you can keep Zendesk for email and add an AI agent such as ChatPal.
We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.
Small teams comparing Zendesk usually weigh two costs: the per-agent price, and AI billed on top. Both grow with the business. A fourth agent on Suite Team adds $55 a month billed annually, and every automated resolution past the allowance is $1.50 to $2.00. The alternatives below split those two costs differently: per agent with AI on top (Freshdesk, Help Scout, Zoho Desk, Intercom), per ticket (Gorgias), per workspace with AI credits (Crisp), or by monthly AI replies (ChatPal).
You don't have to choose between staying and leaving, either: you can keep Zendesk for email and put an AI agent in front of it for chat and messaging. This page covers all three paths, for small stores and support teams where chat and messaging matter as much as email.
We make ChatPal, which is one of the options here, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
What to weigh in Zendesk's pricing
The seat price. Support Team is $19 per agent a month billed annually, but it is email ticketing. Messaging and live chat on your website start on Suite Team at $55, and skills-based routing, IVR and AI writing tools on Professional at $115. Billed monthly, those are $69 and $149.
AI is a second meter. Zendesk's AI agents are included, but each automated resolution counts against an allowance of 5 resolutions per agent a month on Team, 10 on Professional. Past it, each costs $1.50 bought in advance or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and overage is switched on by default. Copilot, the AI that helps agents, is $50 per agent a month more, billed annually. Our Zendesk pricing page works through the bills.
Built for larger teams. Zendesk's plans add departments, brands and SLAs, which a store with three people answering chats may not use.
When Zendesk is still right
Keep Zendesk if:
- you have a larger team working across several brands, departments or languages with routing rules;
- email and phone are most of your support, and your reports, macros and SLAs are built on Zendesk;
- your help center is large and ranks in search, and moving it would cost more than the seats.
If you mostly want a different AI on chat, you don't have to leave: see "Keep and augment" below.
How we chose
We looked at tools a team of 2 to 5 can run without an admin, that handle chat or messaging and not only email, that offer AI answers, and that publish prices. We read each tool's pricing page and help center on 13 October 2026. We make ChatPal; we did not test the others hands-on.
The tools are grouped by the path they fit, not ranked.

What 3 agents cost
Seats or plan only, billed annually where the tool offers it, in US dollars before tax. The AI column is what each tool charges for AI answers on top.
| Tool | 3 agents a month | Chat and messaging | AI on top |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Suite Team | $165 | Messaging, live chat | 15 resolutions included, then $1.50 to $2.00 each |
| Zendesk Support Team | $57 | Email ticketing only | Same resolution pricing |
| Freshdesk Growth | $57 | Email first: Freshworks describes Growth as service over email | 500 free AI sessions once per account, then $49 per 100 |
| Help Scout Standard | $75 | Live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger | AI Answers $0.75 per resolution |
| Zoho Desk Standard | $42 | Live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram | AI agents with up to 30M free tokens a month; Zia on Professional ($69 for 3) |
| Gorgias Basic | $50 for 300 tickets; seats depend on the plan | Chat, social; SMS add-on | $0.90 per AI interaction billed annually, each also a ticket |
| Intercom Essential | $57 | Messenger, live chat | Fin $0.99 per outcome |
| Crisp Essentials | $95 for up to 10 seats | WhatsApp, Instagram | $25 of AI credits, around 450 conversations |
| ChatPal | $20 to $120 by AI replies | Website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram | Included in the plan |
Gorgias Basic covers 300 tickets a month; Pro is $300 billed annually for 2,000. ChatPal is not a helpdesk, so its row is the AI assistant only: your team answers handed-off chats in ChatPal's inbox, and email stays wherever it is today.
Which alternative fits your team
A Shopify store with one to three people answering. Many tickets are "where is my order", sizes and returns. Gorgias is built for this and prices its plans by ticket volume rather than per agent. If those questions arrive mostly in chat and on WhatsApp or Instagram rather than by email, an AI assistant can take routine ones before a helpdesk is needed: ChatPal answers from your catalog and tells signed-in customers where their order is.
A small team where email is still most of the work. Freshdesk Growth at $19 an agent and Help Scout Standard at $25 an agent, billed annually, give you a shared inbox, a knowledge base and AI on top. Zendesk's own email plan, Support Team, is $19 an agent. Help Scout's free plan is enough to try with your real inbox, up to 100 contacts a month.
A team that needs WhatsApp and Instagram in the helpdesk. Zoho Desk Standard ($14 an agent) and Help Scout Standard both include them. Crisp Essentials ($95 for up to 10 seats) adds them with AI credits, at one price for the team.
A software company. Intercom's in-app chat suits a SaaS product more than a store, in our view, at $19 a seat billed annually plus Fin per outcome.
You want to spend nothing yet. Zoho Desk's free plan (3 users, email) and Help Scout's (5 users, 100 contacts) are full helpdesks you can run for free. Crisp's free plan covers chat for 2 seats without AI, and ChatPal's covers 100 AI replies a month on every channel.
Keep and augment, or replace
Keep Zendesk and add an AI agent. Best when your team, macros and reports live in Zendesk and you want a flat-price AI, or one assistant across your website and messaging apps. ChatPal connects to Zendesk on every plan, the free one included. In Autopilot it answers tickets itself and hands the ones it shouldn't keep to a Zendesk group; in Copilot it drafts replies your agents accept, edit or reject in a sidebar. It can sync your Help Center articles, so it answers from what you've already written. The same assistant also answers on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and your website, with those handoffs coming to ChatPal's inbox. Fin is the per-outcome alternative inside Zendesk, at $0.99 each. Setup is in the Zendesk AI chatbot guide.
Replace Zendesk with a lighter helpdesk. Best when email is still a big share of support and you want one place for everything. Freshdesk and Zoho Desk are the closest to Zendesk's model per agent; Help Scout has a free plan to start on; Gorgias suits Shopify stores and prices by ticket volume rather than per agent.
Replace Zendesk with an AI-first chat tool. Best when most customers write in chat and messaging apps, email is light, and two or three people handle what the AI can't. Crisp gives a whole team one price with AI credits. ChatPal answers on your website and messaging apps from your content and Shopify catalog, and your team takes over handed-off chats in its inbox. With ChatPal you'll need somewhere else for email.
Migrating off Zendesk
- Export early. Zendesk's export tools aren't on Team plans; there, only the REST API exports data. On other plans the account owner must ask Zendesk support to enable exports first, so ask well before you switch. Tickets handled by Zendesk's AI agents can't be exported with those tools.
- Decide what history you need. You may only need the last few months of open and recent tickets, not years. Check whether your new helpdesk, or a migration service it recommends, imports from Zendesk.
- Keep your help center reachable. Your articles are your AI's knowledge. If you keep Zendesk's help center, ChatPal and Tidio can import its articles; if you move it, publish the new one before you switch the old one off.
- Move one channel at a time. Start with chat or one messaging app, run it for a week, then move email last, since that is where customers notice a broken reply chain.
- Keep one Zendesk seat for a short overlap, so customers who reply to an old ticket email still get an answer.
If you're coming from Gorgias rather than Zendesk, see Gorgias alternatives. For the AI-agent side of the decision, Intercom Fin alternatives compares per-outcome and flat-price AI.
