Botpress alternatives: what to use if you'd rather not build the bot
Yevhen Kurapov, co-founder · Updated Oct 13, 2026
Botpress Plus costs $189 a month billed monthly for 250 conversations, and packs of 100 more at $65 are added automatically. To answer customer questions from your content without building, ChatPal is free for 100 replies a month, then $20 a month for 500. Chatbase suits a website agent with many integrations, Landbot guided flows, Voiceflow enterprise teams with developers.
We make ChatPal, one of the tools below, and list its limits on the same terms as everyone else's.
Botpress is a strong platform for a team that wants to build its own AI agent: AI nodes that choose tools, a long list of channels, and code where you need it. The flip side is that someone on your team builds and maintains it. If what you need is an assistant that answers customer questions from your website and documents, ChatPal, Chatbase and Landbot below get you there without code, and the first two without drawing flows either. Voiceflow is here for the opposite case: a team with developers that wants control over every step.
What to weigh with Botpress
You build the agent. Botpress Studio is visual, but it is still work: you write an Autonomous Node's instructions, choose which knowledge bases it searches, add tools, and connect channels one by one. Custom logic runs as JavaScript in Execute Code cards, which can't import external libraries. For a support team with a developer, that is flexibility. For a small business owner who wanted a chat on the website by Friday, it is a project.
The price is per conversation, and the first paid step is $189. The free plan stops at 100 conversations a month, with no top-ups; the table below has the paid plans. On a paid plan, Botpress adds a pack of 100 conversations automatically when you reach 95% of your quota, so the bot is never cut off. Its FAQ says the auto-add can't be turned off; packs stay on your plan until you remove them in billing settings.
Tests count too. Botpress counts a conversation as any exchange with at least two customer messages in a billing month, and its FAQ says emulator conversations count the same as real ones. A busy week of testing uses the same quota as customers.
Botpress pricing, plan by plan
| Free | Plus | Team | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billed monthly | $0 | $189 a month | $939 a month |
| Billed yearly | $0 | $150 a month | $750 a month |
| Conversations a month | 100 | 250 | 1,500 |
| Extra conversations | None | Packs of 100 for $65 | Packs of 100 for $50 |
| AI usage included | Not stated | $25 | $150 |
| AI agents | 3 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Seats | 3 | 3 | Unlimited |
Enterprise is priced on request and adds a voice channel. When AI usage nears its limit, Botpress buys a $10 credit grant at cost, and unused grants carry over for up to 12 months. Unused conversations in a pack expire at the end of the month. Prices checked on 13 October 2026.
When Botpress is still the right choice
Stay on Botpress if you need any of these:
- Channels ChatPal doesn't have. Botpress lists integrations for Slack, Microsoft Teams, Viber, LINE, WeChat and Discord as well as WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Telegram.
- Handoff into the helpdesk you already use. It has handoff integrations for Intercom, HubSpot, LiveChat, Freshchat and Zoho SalesIQ.
- Custom logic and many agents. Plus includes unlimited AI agents, and code lets you call any API.
- A predictable bill at higher volume. The Team plan's 1,500 conversations and $50 packs suit a team with steady, known volume, and Botpress argues that per-conversation pricing is easier to budget than paying per resolution.
How we chose
We picked tools that answer customers in chat and that a team can run with less building than Botpress. For each, we read the pricing page and the help or developer docs on 13 October 2026 and noted how you build, where it answers and what is metered. Voiceflow doesn't publish prices; we kept it because it is built for the same kind of team as Botpress, one with developers.
We make ChatPal, so weigh our view of it accordingly. We did not test the other tools hands-on. The tools are grouped by the situation they suit, not ranked.

- WhatsApp with your own number starts on Professional (€100 a month billed monthly), as an add-on
What the same month costs
Each tool counts something different, so here are two months on the same assumptions. Where a tool counts replies, we assumed 3 AI replies per conversation. That is our assumption, not a measured average: count the replies in a week of your own chats and use your number. Prices are for monthly billing.
250 conversations a month (750 replies):
- Botpress: Plus, $189. Billed yearly, $150.
- ChatPal: Standard, $50 for 1,500 replies. Starter's 500 replies would cover about 165 conversations at 3 replies each.
- Chatbase: on a model that uses 1 credit a reply, Hobby's 700 credits plus one $40 auto-recharge of 1,000, so $80.
- Landbot: Starter, €40, covers 500 chats but only 100 AI chats; the other 150 AI chats cost €0.10 each, so about €55.
- Voiceflow: not published.
1,000 conversations a month (3,000 replies):
- Botpress: Plus at $189 plus 8 packs of 100 at $65, so $709, plus AI usage past the $25 included. Team, at $939, covers 1,500 without packs.
- ChatPal: Pro, $120 for 4,000 replies.
- Chatbase: Standard, $150 for 4,000 credits, on a 1-credit model. On a model that uses 2 credits a reply, 6,000 credits: Standard plus two $40 recharges, $230.
- Landbot: Professional, €100, includes 2,500 chats and 300 AI chats; the other 700 AI chats cost €70, so about €170.
- Voiceflow: not published.
Botpress counts test and human-assisted conversations against the same quota as AI answers, and adds paid packs past your plan automatically; its FAQ says that can't be switched off. ChatPal counts your own Playground replies too, but stops at the limit instead: it alerts the owner and admins at 80%, and at 100% the assistant stops replying until the month resets or you upgrade.
What about Voiceflow's pricing?
Voiceflow is the alternative closest to Botpress in how you build, and it doesn't publish a price list. Its pricing page offers agencies a free trial with usage-based billing and sends businesses to book a demo. Its docs describe four plans (Free, Pro, Business and Enterprise), a monthly credit allotment on paid plans, and a free plan whose credits are a one-time grant that doesn't renew. Every interaction uses credits, chat messages and AI model calls included, at rates that depend on the model you pick. To compare it with Botpress, ask for a quote at your expected volume and model.
Five questions to ask any alternative
Whichever tool you look at, these five answers decide most of the bill and most of the work:
- What counts? A conversation, a reply, a credit or a contact. Count a week of your own chats in that unit before you compare prices.
- Do my tests count? On Botpress and ChatPal they do. Chatbase gives a separate allowance of test credits, 200 a month on Hobby. Plan for a few hundred test replies in the first month.
- What happens at the limit? The bill grows automatically, or the assistant stops. Pick the one you can live with on your busiest day.
- Where does a handed-off chat go? Into the tool's own inbox, into your helpdesk, or nowhere. Ask a test question that needs a person and follow it.
- Which channels are included on the plan I'd buy? Some tools list a channel that only arrives on a higher plan, such as WhatsApp with your own number on Landbot's Professional.
Botpress or ChatPal
Choose Botpress if:
- you have a developer, or want to become one for this project;
- you need Slack, Microsoft Teams, Viber or another channel ChatPal doesn't have;
- you want handoff into Intercom, HubSpot or another helpdesk you already pay for.
Choose ChatPal if:
- most of what customers send is questions, and you'd rather give the assistant your website and documents than draw nodes;
- your customers write on your website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Telegram, and you want every channel on every plan, the free one included;
- you want your team to answer handed-off chats from one inbox, and a hard monthly cap instead of automatic packs.
Moving off Botpress
- List what the bot does. Go through a month of conversations. Many bots mostly answer questions, with a few fixed sequences, such as qualifying a lead.
- Collect the originals. Find the files and website pages your knowledge bases were built from. None of the pages we read for this comparison mentions importing a Botpress bot, so plan to add them again.
- Rebuild only the sequences. In an AI-first tool such as ChatPal or Chatbase, the question-answering part needs no flows. Rebuild a flow only where it did something other than answer.
- Test side by side. Put the new tool in its own test chat and ask it 20 real questions from last month, word for word. In ChatPal that is the Playground, where Why this answer? shows what each answer was based on. Our guide to building an AI chatbot walks through the setup.
- Swap the channel. Replace the Botpress web chat snippet on your site with the new one, or reconnect your WhatsApp or Telegram, one channel at a time. Then downgrade Botpress once nothing runs on it.
Step 4 costs nothing on ChatPal's free plan, so you can see the answers to your own 20 questions before you cancel anything. The pricing page has the plan that matches your reply count.
